the Raindrop Technique (RDT)

The purpose of Raindrop Technique is to stimulate healing in every organ, muscle, bone and ligament in your body at the cellular level, to boost your immune system and to bring your body into structural and electrical balance, thereby enabling the release of toxins and disease. Not surprisingly, this intense discharge often includes toxins that are embedded in your mind and emotions, facilitating a powerful transformation on many levels.

Raindrop is not a massage, but rather a form of physical meditation, an anointing, that stimulates a relaxing and healing response throughout your body. In RDT, therapeutic grade essential oils are dropped in a specific sequence onto the back from 6 inches above the spine, like drops of rain. The oils are then feathered, stroked and cajoled along the spine to drive the oils deep into your body, where they can really work their magic. The process is completed with a soothing application of warm moist towels while you rest, and many people fall asleep at this time. The technique is a luxurious, transformative experience; I think of it as a body prayer. The effects can last days, often even weeks, renewing and revitalizing every cell.

Some people find RDT to be invigorating, recharging their batteries, and others find the process more relaxing and internal. No two people are alike, and no one’s response is the same each time. Because of the varied properties of the oils used for RDT, some people report that their experience yields other positive and unexpected benefits. The way I offer the experience, the entire process can take from one to one and a half hours. This aromatic touch is done in silence and with the deepest respect for your comfort. Raindrop is powerfully effective for anyone, including babies, the elderly and even for animals such as horses and dogs.

RDT deals with unseen energies. The reason essential oils are dropped from several inches above the back is so that the therapeutic energy field of the oils begins to work with the energy field of the receiver before the oil even touches the skin. Once on the skin, the oils penetrate into the cells in the furthest extremities of the body, spreading the magic of their chemistry and the music of their vibrations. According to Dr. David Stewart, author of The Chemistry of Essential Oils Made Simple, oils grown and distilled with the intent of healing are imbued with energies not present in oils grown and distilled with the intent to flavor foods or make perfumes. For this reason, I only work with Young Living’s Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils.

Where did the Raindrop Technique originate?

The Raindrop Technique was developed by Dr. D. Gary Young, founder of Young Living Essential Oils, as a synthesis of healing concepts he learned in his research into natural healing modalities from around the world.

Years ago, Gary spent some time with tribal elders of the Lakota, listening to their stories and soaking up their knowledge. One of these men was the Lakota holy man Wallace Black Elk. Black Elk told the story of how each spring, the Lakota would journey way up north to the area in what is now called Canada to experience the majesty and healing benefits of the Aurora Borealis — the Northern Lights. The people would stand beneath the dancing luminescent musical energy field, and using their hands, they would draw down this energy from the sky into their bodies, breathing it in, and pushing the healing vibration up their spines. The Lakota believed that these enchanting light/sounds had the power to raise their energy and to make them well.

In the 1800s, when the political borders between the United States and Canada were put in place, the Lakota could no longer journey north to experience their annual healing ritual. Instead, they adopted the practice of brushing one another up the spine with their fingertips and with eagle feathers to simulate the taking in of energy from the Aurora Borealis.

Integrating this shamanic healing practice with the power of therapeutic-grade essential oils, Gary was guided to develop the feathering method utilized in spreading the oils during the Raindrop Technique. Combining this process with the electrical manipulative healing modality called Vitaflex, (a technique adapted from Reflexology by Stanley Borroughs), RDT was born. The Raindrop Technique is a powerful experience not to be missed…

NOTE: The unfortunate reality is that the FDA’s current interpretation of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 doesn’t allow me to go beyond these vague statements. If you would like further information, your best resources would be the Essential Oils Desk Reference (4th ed.), the Raindrop Technique video, and the Science & Application of Essential Oils video.

Raindrop Technique works with the recipients own healing energy and therefore, I customize each experience to what is needed in the moment, using tuning forks, Reiki, and a lovely guided meditation with seashells.

Young Living Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils are the only oils allowed to be used in raindrop therapy. RDT is an emerging technique used by many massage therapists, spas, alternative medicine clinics, etc. RDT is based on the theory that many types of spinal misalignments (as well as MANY other aliments/disorders and diseases) are caused by viruses or bacteria that lie dormant along the spine.

What are the oils used in Raindrop Technique?

Most of the RDT oils are high in phenolic content to ward off potentially damaging viruses and bacteria while cleansing cellular receptor sites to enhance inter- and intra-cellular communication and improve overall bodily function. Some RDT oils contain a variety of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes to assist in deleting the misinformation in the DNA and in reprogramming correct information in the cellular memory to restore and maintain physical and emotional wellness.

The oils used in RDT must be highest quality therapeutic grade oils and therefore I only use and recommend the use of Young Living Essential Oils.

Valor – Contains oils of spruce, rosewood, blue tansy, and frankincense in an almond oil base. Gentle and soothing, Valor helps balance the body’s electrical system and stimulates spinal realignment. Valor affects the limbic system to improve one’s self-image, enhancing one’s feelings of confidence, courage and self-esteem. Contains esters, monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. Valor is used first because it is the oil that prepares you to receive the other oils.

Oregano- Oregano is one of the most powerful antimicrobial essential oils. Cleans cellular receptor sites.

Thyme-Antiseptic, immune-enhancing, supportive of the body’s natural defenses. High in phenolproponoids.

Basil-Relaxes both voluntary and involuntary muscles. (Voluntary muscles include all of the motor muscles of the arms, legs, back, abdomen, neck and face.) Basil is also mentally energizing and invigorating. Used for tension headaches. Can improve the senses of taste and smell. High in phenolic esters (estragole and anethole)

Wintergreen- Supports joints and the skeletal structure. Is composed of more than 80% methyl salicylate (a phenolic ester) which has a cortisone-like effect on that it may stimulate the body’s own production of natural cortisone which has none of the side-effects of synthetic cortisone. Wintergreen also has an analgesic property, and is similar in chemical structure to aspirin.

Marjoram- Relaxing to both the voluntary and involuntary muscles. Involuntary muscles include the heart, diaphragm, digestive tract, and reproductive organs. Marjoram is 50% monoterpenes.

Cypress-Supportive of the circulatory and lymphatic systems. Stimulates the body’s natural white corpuscle production. Cypress is 76% monoterpenes and 14% sesquiterpenes which may assist in restoring proper cellular programming for optimal wellness.

Peppermint- Supports the digestive, respiratory and nervous systems. Can be used for headaches and to stimulate mental alertness, concentration and mental retention. Good for detoxing the liver, Peppermint is a synergistic oil that supports and improves the beneficial actions of other oils. High in phenolics, contains 9% sesquiterpenes.

AromaSeiz Massage Oil- a muscle-relaxing blend consisting of basil, marjoram, lavender, peppermint and cypress. Calming, relaxing and tension-relieving, AromaSeiz relaxes tight muscles, spasms, muscle seizures and charley horses. May relieve headaches. Contains monoterpenes, esters and phenols.

OrthoEase Oil- a soothing massage oil based in a blend of wheat germ, grape seed, almond, olive and vitamin E oils and contains essential oils of wintergreen, juniper, marjoram, red thyme, vetiver, peppermint, eucalyptus, and lemongrass. Contains natural anti-oxidants and is used to soothe aching muscles and minor swelling.
